Types of Websites

Websites are created for many different purposes. Special tools and software have been developed over the years for creating the different types of websites.

Conventional

The conventional website was once the most common type found on the internet.

They are usually built with static HTML and provide very little interaction with the visitor. They can be built using simple text editors like NotePad, Html editors and online website builders.

Conventional websites simply provide information about an individual, a specific topic, a business or organization.

CMS

CMS or Content Management Systems are usually built using special software that uses a database like MySQL. A prebuilt site that includes interactive features like membership sign up, polls and site search, can be installed and modified by the developer. Templates or skins are used to change its appearance.

Blogs

Blogs are developed using CMS software. The word BLOG is short for WEB LOG. A blog is like a journal or a diary used to post the author's comments or opinions on the site on a daily basis.

The blog is becoming the most popular type of website and is mostly used by individuals. There are some blogs posted by businesses and organizations that provide helpful information.

Some blogs allow readers to add their comments to the daily post. Most of these require membership.

Blog Examples:
Mandarin Design is an informative Blog on the subject of web design.

Special software that utilizes PHP an MySQL is used to create blogs. Many web hosts now offer this software in their package.

Social Networks

Social networks aren't really websites but memberships that include a web page where users can share information and music files. They usually include chat rooms where members congregate.

Online Stores

Online stores are used to sell products or services on the internet. They require special resources like shopping carts and security systems that make them safe to use.

Forums or Bulletin Boards

Forums are what we once referred to as bulletin boards.

Most forums allow a member to post a question or problem about a subject. Other members can then post replies or solutions to answer the question.

Most forums require membership.

Forums are often added to conventional websites to make them more interactive.

Forum Examples:
Psoft.net provides this forum for users of its popular software, like SiteSTUDIO.

Special software that utilizes PHP and MySQL is used to create forums. Many web hosts now offer this software in their package.
