Page9 - Tutorial

Fonts

Don't get too fancy with fonts or type faces. The font displayed on your page will ultimately be decided by the visiting browser. If you choose an off the wall font like tazmania 234 the visiting browser will most likely not recognize it and will use a default font face.

Stick to arial, tahoma, helvetica, times roman, verdana or other common names. Vary the appearance by changing size, style and weight.

Color

Don't go crazy with color. Use at most 3 colors for your page structure. Less is better when using color.

Don't use light text on a dark background. Especially not in your body text. You make think it's cool, jarhead, but your visitor's eye strain will ensure he doesn't return to your website.

Page Size

We break this rule a lot, but it's good practice to keep your page size to about 20k and that includes images. You want your pages to jump into a browser.

Build your pages to about 100-200k and watch your traffic stats hit rock bottom. Optimize those images.

CSS

Be careful making changes in your CSS file. Don't remove any colons or semicolons. The code below shows the settings for the h1 header tag. For font-family you should specify at least 3 choices separated by commas and the last choice should be generic. Style could be italic. Set size in Points. Weight could be normal. Text-align could be left, justify , right or center. See our HTML tutorial for more info: createafreewebsite.net.
